Any time you attempt a DIY plumbing job at your home or business, it’s important you do your best to avoid making common plumbing mistakes. Even small mistakes can result in anything from minor inconveniences to severe damage to your plumbing systems and fixtures. Fortunately, most common mistakes are highly preventable.

Here are just a few examples from our pump repair service in Hillsborough County, FL of some of the most common plumbing mistakes we see made in people’s homes.

  • Putting fixtures too close to each other: When you’re adding a bathroom in your home or redoing your plumbing, you may find yourself having to work with relatively small areas. Make sure that you give the fixtures enough room apart from each other, and that you choose fixtures that fit in the space you’re dealing with. The tub or shower shouldn’t be too close to the toilet, and there should be enough space for a person to get to the sink. Fixtures being too close together will make for uncomfortable spaces.
  • Not knowing how to fix faucet drips: If you have a constantly dripping faucet, your first step should of course be to make sure the faucet handle is turned all the way off. However, you shouldn’t have to wrench on the handle to close it all the way—with too much pressure, that handle could break off or become loose. Rarely will brute force be the best way to resolve a plumbing problem.
  • Flushing improper items down the toilet: This is especially likely to be a problem if you have young children in your house, but toilet clogs can affect all households. You should only put items in the toilet that are designed to be flushed down it. It can help to leave the back of the toilet free of clutter so that nothing accidentally drops in and gets flushed down the toilet, causing a major clog.
  • Putting improper items in kitchen sink drains: You shouldn’t just dump debris down the drain in your sink, unless you have a garbage disposal to grind it up. Even then, there are definitely limitations as to what you should and shouldn’t be putting down the drain. You should never put coffee grounds, eggshells, oils, greases, fats, paper towels, flushable wipes, cat litter and fruit and vegetable pits or peelings down the drain. A good general rule is that if you’re unsure the drain will be able to handle it, just throw it in the garbage instead.
  • Crowded plumbing: Just as you need to give your fixtures enough room, you also need to give your plumbing infrastructure enough room. If there’s not enough free space around a pipe, it can be very difficult for you to get in and make repairs as needed. Make sure you’re giving your pipes room to breathe.
